Dr. Alton A. Gould was born in Renfrew, On-Ontario, June 1st, 1922. Dr. Gould gave his heart to the Lord in 1935 and was led by the Holy Spirit to enter the Christian ministry with the Holiness Movement Church, being ordained in 1943. A newspaper report stated that he was the youngest ordained minister in Canada of any denomination at the time. Throughout the years he served a number of pastorates, the first being St. Regis Falls, New York, 1943-45, and later in Toronto, Canada. Dr. Gould has had a broad and influential missionary experience over many years. He labored in Hunan province, China, 1947-49. He was the Principal of the Holiness Bible College in McCord, Saskatchewan, 1950-51. The College later merged with, and became a part of Aldersgate College, Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan. He returned to Hong Kong in 1954 working among Chinese refugees as well as Chinese intellecturals. His thirteen years of missionary service in Hong Kong with the assistance from many Chinese pastors witnessed the opening of nine churches and seven Primary Schools with over 3,500 children enrolled. His dynamic leadership at the Christian Chrildren's Fund of the Philippines made the child population of the program grow from 750 to over 25,000 in 1967-75 He received the Honorary Doctor of Humanities Degree from Philippine Christian University. The Citation and Archdiocese Medallion of Appreciation was conferred by Cardinal Sin upon approval of the Vatican to honor his contribution to humanitarian relief effort. Dr. Gould has preached in many cities around the world. He is one of the most effective mission statesmen in the third world countries. He was elected as President of the Evangelize China Fellowship of Canada in 1983 and succeeded as Chairman of ECF International at the sudden death of J. Edwin Orr in 1987. Dr. Gould's love for China led him and his wife, Mrs. Phyllis (Joynt) Gould, back to Hunan province to reopen exciting Christian works there for ECF International. Dr. and Mrs. Gould were named "Parents of the Year" by Spring Arbor College, Michigan, USA, in 1979. Now in retirement, they live in Sault Ste Marie, Ontario, Canada. Their three children: Gail, Robert, and Sandra and their children make frequent visits from the United States. |
